Two telecommunications companies, Avaya and Nortel, have established a partnership that will allow them to provide new software and telephone services to the customers left stranded with old systems in the wake of Nortel Networks’ disintegration in 2009.
The deal mostly affects customers using the Avaya Communications servers known as the CS-2100 and the SL-2100. For years, these customers have only been given limited updates to their services because Nortel was no longer providing such updates.
With the deal in place, customers will have the opportunity to take advantage of Genband’s advanced technology. There are already upgrades planned that will be offered to these customers.
This will be a major improvement upon the situation since Nortel’s departure from the telecommunications market. Since then, customers using servers based on Nortel’s technology could only receive customer service from Avaya. There were no upgrades and no new products offered to them, however.
That innovation vacuum will now be filled by Genband, which supplies software, hardware, and servers to telecommunications companies like Avaya. Some of the services that CS-2100 and SL-100 users will now have access to include VoIP on mobile phones, video collaborating, and instant messaging.
The first of these new capabilities will be rolled out early next year, in the first quarter of 2013. Avaya said that during that update, customers could expect to get upgraded VoIP, and that after that arrives, there will be a series of other new products and capabilities added as well.
The terms of the agreement between Avaya and Genband stipulate that Genband will become wholly responsible for both systems, the CS-2100 and the SL-100. These phone systems are typically utilized by major clients, with large, complicated phone systems and zero tolerance for downtime. Frequent users of the phone systems include hospitals, financial firms, and critical government departments.
For its part, Avaya will give Genband access to parts of its intellectual property. Spokesmen for the companies said that the result will be that Genband’s products will be more enterprise-enabled, which is Avaya’s strength, and that Avaya products will be more resistant to downtime, which is one of Genband’s specialties.
The companies doubt the integration of their respective code bases should cause any great difficulty or take more than a few months. The software used to run Genband and Avaya products is largely similar, and combining the two is only expected to require adding some small bits of proprietary code from each.

The BCM Era is Over and Avaya IP Office Reigns Supreme (What Does This Mean For You?)

Who can deny that that technology is advancing at an alarming rate?  Why just consider the Nortel BCM telephone system.  This system has been described as one of the best inventions of its type, and helped Nortel to reach a worldwide #1 market position.

However, technology is moving so fast that Avaya has apparently determined that the best is no longer relevant.  The company is in the process of terminating the BCM product line, as they recently announced an end of sale for the system.  This was not particularly shocking, since rumors have been heard of its termination for quite a while, especially in lieu of the Avaya roadmap two years ago.

Nevertheless, this will have a significant impact on the North American market for telecommunications.  Nortel MeridianNorstar and BCM claimed nearly 80% of the entire Canadian telephone market, not to mention millions of purchased from around the world.

However, don’t fear the worst.  The company is not cutting the operation off…they are simply moving customers to a different direction, namely, the Avaya IP office 8.1 system.  The company is confident that its customers will see the value of upgrading to Avaya IP Office for a number of reasons.  They include:

"Now What are the Most Important Reasons to Think About Upgrading to an Avaya IP Office?"

·         Your current telecommunications system is a few years out of date.
·         You have not updated the phone system for a number of years.
·         You have not updated the software for a few years.
·         Your hardware is no longer supported by the company.
·         Your business is expanding.
·         You are relocating.
·         Email is a major point of growth in next decade.
·         Most of your sales happen as the result of your telephone system.
·         You handle heavy conference calls.
·         You use fax services on a daily basis.
·         You require call recording for training or compliance purposes.
·         You operate in more than one office.

"Don’t Panic!  There is Still Time for Planning"

The company does not expect you to suddenly make the switch.  They are encouraging gradual migration.  They allow customers to reuse Nortel handsets in order to hold onto to some of the investment.  And this is a timely decision, considering that most companies hold off from upgrading because of cost and loss issues.

Because customers can keep the same phones and simply switch the software, they can avoid much of the new investment that would make the switch unfeasible.  Some companies are already undergoing a switching process, starting the trade slowly, giving only the most important positions (i.e. sales, executives) new phones, but providing entry level employees with the standard phones.

What if your company is completely uninterested in upgrading?  Not to worry.  The company is going to keep selling the product until all units have been sold, and will continue to do so for the time being.  They also will continue to provide customers with customer service and tech support, as they have always done according to contract.

However, as technology is ever increasing, the company has found it advantageous to focus on greater opportunities, namely the Avaya IP Office system.  As the future brings brilliant and expanded new technology, so do past products go the way of the dinosaurs.  Still, it’s encouraging to note that Avaya is not forgetting their BCM customers.

In fact, just in case you’re worrying about the future, the company has released a schedule for the product’s final hurrah.

·         BCM products will continue to sell for the next nine months.
·         October 1, 2012 marks the last day of sale for systems excluding upgrades.
·         On October 1, 2015, the company will officially stop providing upgrades, expansion and authorization codes.
·         October 1, 2018 will be the last day Avaya provides support for the BCM product line.

Are you making plans to switch over?  Obviously, you don’t have to make a switch right away…but it may help to think up long-range plans.  Whenever a phone system lasts beyond its useful life, you actually lose money by holding onto it, since you’re holding onto inefficient technology—the likes of which the competition has already left behind.

In the end, you want to be one step-ahead of technology in business, not struggling to catch up!  Fortunately, the company is providing a timeline in advance and sharing information on the upgrade to come.

Avaya Adds a Brand New Feature to Innovative Cloud Software—Collaborative Cloud Framework

Avaya’s Collaborative Cloud Framework offers an exciting new approach to cloud solutions.  The cloud service provider now offers collaboration services and apps through a single, scalable architecture setup.  It sounds like cloud, so what’s the difference?  The difference is in the efficient technology, meaning lost cost.

(That certainly piqued the interest of you business owners, didn't it!)

Enter Collaborative Cloud and Relevant Products/Services

The Collaborative Cloud Framework was demonstrated by Avaya recently, which showed a new portfolio of what the system can do using what they call Collaboration Pods.  The technology encompasses EMC, VMware and other resources, all in an effort to simplify and streamline the system operation.

The Collaborative Cloud Framework is Avaya’s way of improving business, letting clients’ access virtual storage solutions, computing and networking features.  Not only are these features available, but they are also optimized for real time collaboration and can even work with real-time applications.  For instance, the pods are fully capable of cooperating with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure as well as VMware vCenter and VMware View, along with EMC and the company’s own networking software.

Using the Collaborative Cloud Framework and a single Pod-management interface, users can access a single pod-management interface and view relevant products/services, as well as take advantage of group functions and get live tech support.

Pods Make Superior Technology Easy and Flexible

Avaya's vice president of Technical Solutions Marketing, Jean Turgeon, stated that “Pods provide a fast, easy path to the cloud,” and that relevant products/services can help to establish and exploit advanced unified communications and collaboration applications.  It also helps clients work with an application-powered network along with relevant products/services, without having to deal with significant infrastructure issues.

For one thing, the new technology makes it possible for users to access relevant products/services without the requirement of separate set up and configuration of SANs.  This means that all data is easily storable, accessible, manageable and secure from all threats.  The new software, unique because of its “pod” technology, allows clients to reduce cost and complicated infrastructure issues, especially in deploying virtualized applications.

Avaya has always been at the cutting edge of IT.  Analyst Laura DiDio of Information Technology Intelligence Corp. stated that the company is not just creating technology but “becoming a caterer”; she said in reference to the company’s ability to provide tech support, managerial assistance and further communications solutions.  The company’s Collaborative Cloud Framework is certainly a groundbreaking creation, as it is scalable architecture, and one that will no doubt be considered relevant products/services in the cloud software market.

The Big Question of, COST

The last question to answer is what’s the difference between this cloud and all the other systems out there?  Mainly in cost, not to mention the benefits it provides clients who are now better able to compete in their market thanks to enhanced operations.

The Collaborative Cloud Framework also powers another great marketing venture in a Communications Outsourcing Solutions system, which is designed to help communication systems by enhancing performance reducing physical managerial costs.  There is also another system called a Government Outsourcing Solutions which can handle unified communications, contact centres and data networking issues.  What makes this significant is the fact that all software is in compliance with the U.S. federal government's requirements for security relevant products/services.

This scalable system is different, affordable and sure to make some waves in the coming years.

Avaya’s Aura Conferencing 7.0 Software is set to Debut and Change Business Conferencing for the Better

Avaya’s Aura Conferencing 7.0 Software is plugged as the next big thing in conferencing software.  It is a multi-modal system and one that is going to be compatible with Apple iPads and MS Windows PCs.  In addition to the Aura Conferencing 7.0 system, the company will also debut the Avaya Flare Experience.

The conferencing software on its own will give users the chance to enjoy unified web and voice collaboration regardless of whether they use PCs, Macs, Smartphones or even tablet PCs.  The “open standards-based SIP architecture” (the new standard in business) allows multiple device transmission as well as enhanced security.

However, besides the standard features, the company is also debuting an effective interface design, known as the intuitive Avaya Flare Experience.  This interface will allow easy voice collaboration, consolidated directories and real time document sharing, along with instant messaging capabilities.  Other benefits of using the system include:

  • Secure Collaboration (not just encryption but also corporate network deployment and the ability to block unauthorized access)
  • Unified conferencing elements, meaning users can actually share applications at their own speeds.  This will allow demonstrations and presentations in real time.
  • Record and playback abilities, slide shows and even white boarding.
  • And 50% savings from usual conferencing expenses.

The system is said to have the capability of maximizing return on investment in a quick turnaround time—perhaps only half a year.  The ability to take video conferencing and all other PC operations “on the road” and from almost any location is certainly an attractive feature.
Collaboration is not dependent upon shares software—it works with any web browser, even a Smartphone web browser.  This includes PCs, laptops and iPads.  Bandwidth usage is also reduced, which is a major relief on resources, thanks to the design’s superior architecture and “built-in functionality.”

This is perhaps the most significant feature, as the inability to reduce networking resources and budget is what prevents many companies from embracing this technology in the first place.  The fact that video conferencing is now becoming affordable is a huge step in the right direction, and is sure to convince more companies to take their communications to the web.

Avaya and Samsung Work to Make Android SAFE

In this case, SAFE stands for Samsung Approved for Enterprise. This program from Samsung should help them and one of their partners, Avaya, to create high quality devices that will be able to use Avaya One-X. In the effort to attain unified communications throughout all of the different aspects of a company. The Galaxy S III is the first Samsung Device that bears the markings of the SAFE program. This means that the device will be able to work with many different tools designed for unified communications, including Avaya One-X, right out of the box. One of the best features, equally as exciting as the unified communications possibilities, is the fact that SAFE could help IT teams no longer have to worry about Android fragmentation.

Those who are using other types of phones right now might want to consider the Safe2Switch program that Samsung is offering. They will let users of other phones trade in their devices and choose a Samsung smartphone. If you already have a Samsung phone, it will be possible to trade up for a newer device. Those who want to use Avaya One-X should find this to be an enticing offer. Even though the Galaxy S III is the first to have the brand of SAFE on it, there are actually 20 SAFE devices on the market right now.

Samsung decided that by having the SAFE brand more noticeable for their devices, starting with the S III, it will make it easier for IT departments to make a decision on the phones that they choose for their company. IT wants to find phones and devices that are going to work well and that will not need repair all the time. They want something that is able to provide unifiedcommunications for their company and customers. The S III, with Avaya One-X is proving to be a popular choice for IT departments.

In addition to Avaya One-X, Samsung also works with VPN providers, such as Cisco, for IP encryption. Avaya is one of the primary steps in ensuring that the device is going to work great for businesses. It can connect all aspects of the company, offering unified communication and better all around service.

When choosing the phones for your own company, consider the Galaxy S III and the features that it offers. Make sure that you are working with a phone that is going to be able to give your employees the access and the unified communications they need for a seamless operation.

The non-GAAP amounts in the first quarter of 2012 exclude $1.2 million of merger costs related to the acquisition of RADVISION by Avaya, which was approved by RADVISION shareholders on April 30, 2012.  Also excluded are income of $0.6 million for prior year’s tax adjustments, $0.4 million of amortization of purchased intangibles, $0.4 million for the effects of stock-based compensation expense in accordance with ASC 718, and income of $0.1 million due to the other than temporary impairment of certain Auction Rate Securities. The total amount excluded for non-GAAP purposes was $1.2 million, equivalent to $0.07 per diluted share.

The non-GAAP amounts in the first quarter of 2011 exclude $0.5 million of expense for amortization of purchased intangibles, $0.5 million for the effects of stock-based compensation expense, and a loss of $0.01 million due to the other than temporary impairment of certain Auction Rate Securities. The total amount excluded for non-GAAP purposes was $1.0 million, equivalent to $0.05 per diluted share.

For the first quarter of 2012, total revenues consisted of $15.2 million for the Video Business Unit (VBU) and $2.2 million for the Technology Business Unit (TBU).  This compares with $15.9 million for the VBU and $4.8 million for the TBU reported in the first quarter of 2011.

The Company’s guidelines for the first quarter of 2012 as reported on February 8, 2012 and updated on April 4, 2012 were for revenues of approximately $17.0 million, a non-GAAP operating loss of $6.9 million, and a net loss of $0.47 to $0.49 per diluted share on a GAAP basis, and $0.37 per diluted share on a non-GAAP basis.

The reconciliation between GAAP net income and Non-GAAP net income is provided in the tables at the end of this press release.

The Company ended the first quarter of 2012 with approximately $89.5 million in cash and liquid investments, equivalent to $4.82 per basic share, a decrease of $1.1 million from December 31, 2011. The decrease reflects $2.3 million used in operating activities and $0.3 million for capital expenditures offset by $1.5 million received from the exercise of options.

Boaz Raviv, Chief Executive Officer, commented: “Our Video Business Unit exceeded our expectations in the first quarter due to higher than expected sales of both our infrastructure and endpoint products.  This strong performance more than offset lower Technology Business Unit revenues.

“Over the past two years we have been successfully transforming RADVISION into an end-to-end videoconferencing solution provider with leading technology.  That transformation has continued in 2012.  In March, we debuted the first and the flagship product of our next generation video system, the SCOPIA XT5000. Designed for the high end market, the SCOPIA XT5000 is the most powerful HD video conferencing system in its class available on the market.  In April, we expanded our next generation HD video conferencing room system portfolio with the SCOPIA XT4200, which offers outstanding value and cost-effective HD video communications, especially suited for the smaller and mid-sized conference room.  We are gratified by the market response to our new portfolio.

“Since our founding in 1992, RADVISION has been a leading innovator in video communications technology.  We are excited to continue that tradition as part of Avaya, a leading global provider of business collaboration and communications solutions. By joining forces, we plan to create a very powerful force in the unified communications marketplace.”

The Company noted that RADVISION and Avaya expect their merger to be completed in the second quarter of 2012.

GAAP versus NON-GAAP Presentation
To supplement the consolidated financial statements presented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States ("GAAP"), the Company uses non-GAAP measures of operating results, net income and earnings per share, which are adjusted from results based on GAAP to exclude other than temporary impairment of available for sale marketable securities, the expenses recorded for stock compensation in accordance with ASC 718, amortization of purchased intangibles, prior year’s tax adjustments and merger-related costs. These non-GAAP financial measures are provided to enhance overall understanding of the current financial performance and prospects for the future. Specifically, the Company believes the non-GAAP results provide useful information to both management, and investors as these non-GAAP results exclude other than temporary impairment of available for sale marketable securities, the expenses recorded for stock compensation in accordance with ASC 718, amortization of purchased intangibles, prior year’s tax adjustments and merger-related costs that the Company believes are not indicative of the core operating results. Further, these non-GAAP results are one of the primary indicators management uses for assessing the Company's performance, allocating resources and planning and forecasting future periods. These measures should be considered in addition to results prepared in accordance with GAAP, but should not be considered a substitute for or superior to GAAP results. These non-GAAP measures may be different from the non-GAAP measures used by other companies.
